Hey, MIT social justice warriors. Want a million bucks?

When it comes to transforming impressionable young science and engineering students into social activists pursuing all the latest causes, money is no object at MIT. Why take an internship at a hot technology startup or respected engineering firm, or do summer research in a leading science lab, when MIT’s Office of Experiential Learning will pay you to deliver “social impact” through its Experiential Learning Opportunities (ELOs).

Topping the list are projects in climate change, health equity, and racial justice. And don’t forget that catch-all “tech for good.” You know, stuff like finding new ways to censor disinformation, monitor misgendering complaints, or assure compliance with vaccine and masking mandates.

The long-term ambitions of this office are as oversized as its budget. “MIT is looking to grow the number of rigorous social impact ELOs offered across the Institute so that, in time, 25-30% of undergraduates will have immersive, hands-on learning experiences with ethical, political, environmental, social, and community dimensions.”

Eat your heart out, Oberlin.

Alas, according to the latest progress report not enough men are signing up to become social justice warriors. It’s a good thing MIT’s admissions office makes sure every class is fifty percent female so the SJW pipeline doesn’t run dry!

The three women that run the ELO program, including the Office of Vice Chancellor Chief of Staff and Senior Associate Dean, have extensive backgrounds in sociology, higher education administration, and needle felting. So they are sure to overcome the toxic masculinity that keeps men from doing their part to Build a Better World.
