Those who can, do. Those who can’t, pontificate.

The Future of Life Institute (FLI) posits itself as a watchdog protecting the human race from dangerous technologies. It does this by inviting renowned Experts™ like Science Communicator Alan Alda to flap their gums, write manifestos, churn out scary videos, and dole out grants.

Its latest contribution is the AI Safety Index. In this 100-page guide, college professors from UC Berkeley and MIT joined the “Greta Thunberg of AI” to assign safety grades to leading companies developing Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. Unlike most college grading, they largely handed out Ds and Fs. This underscores the gravity of heeding their sage advice.

Previous FLI successes include protecting us from dangerous biotechnology. FLI Experts™ concluded that the SARS-CoV-2 virus is of zoonotic origin and did not originate in or escape from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.  It’s comforting to know that they assign no responsibility to Anthony Fauci or the EcoHealth Alliance for the pandemic. FLI has nothing to say about the efficacy of government lockdowns, and has fallen silent on the subject ever since April 2023 shortly after Congressional hearings on SARS-CoV-2’s origin.

And don’t forget FLI’s success protecting us from nuclear war. FLI praised Obama’s 2016 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) settlement with Iran and its “durable, enforceable cap” on uranium enrichment. After which the administration shipped Iran $1.7 billion in cash. OK, so both the cap and the agreement failed. But subsequent to the obliteration of Iran’s nuclear threat by the IDF and American B-2 bombers, FLI boldly said … nothing.

The 2025 FLI AI Safety Index reveals an industry trust crisis. Based on its stellar track record with other existential risks, shouldn’t FLI be your trusted guide?
