MIT School of Humanities to replace grades with participation trophies

Today, the Committee on Equity in Student Performance at the MIT School of Humanities, Arts, and Socialist Sciences announced that starting with the 2022-2023 academic year, all students taking humanities courses will receive participation trophies instead of letter grades.

“The current practice of assigning a letter grade clearly establishes a hierarchy of student performance which is highly correlated with elitist notions of merit and effort,” explained the committee chairwomxn. “By substituting these trophies, we will allow every student to feel successful and welcomed. There is no place in modern education for anxiety associated with striving for socially constructed goals of accomplishment and success.”

When asked whether or not students will bother to study or complete class assignments, she/they/zir replied, “It is precisely those outdated patriarchal norms of elitism and intellect-centric thinking that we are hoping to smash.”
