The Babbling Beaver made national news last spring when he broke the story that the MIT administration quietly decided to ban DEI statements in faculty hiring and promotions. Alas, the School of Engineering never got the memo when it comes to its Postdoctoral Fellowship Program.
This program is designed for applicants “who have the potential to contribute to higher education through understanding the barriers facing women, minorities, students with disabilities, and other members of groups underrepresented in higher education careers, as evidenced by life experiences and educational background.”
What life experiences and educational backgrounds are they looking for?
- attendance at a minority serving institution or other diverse academic institution;
- ability to articulate the barriers facing women and minorities in science and engineering fields;
- participation in higher education pipeline programs known to prepare students for the relevant MIT program.
Oh, and applicants will also be given consideration if they qualified for free/reduced lunch back in elementary school.
The program explicitly states that it favors applicants who “identify as African American/Black; Hispanic/Latinx; Native American or Alaska Native; and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander.”
MIT’s Assistant Dean of LGBTQ+ must be green with envy knowing that places haven’t been reserved for her grievance tribe. White males and Asians can make their way to the back of the bus.
