Attracted by the climate cash cornucopia conferred upon Big Science by the Biden administration, the world’s leading STEM university went all in. MIT President Sally Kornbluth declared the race for NetZero the Institute’s signature effort, with 30% of the faculty now feeding at the climate funding trough.
But then, the Bad Orange Man snatched the crown, and analysts are predicting that the porkfest will soon be over. Riding shotgun in his new administration will be Mr. Mars-or-Bust, who claims he can whack $2 trillion dollars a year out of the federal budget.
What’s a scientist on the dole to do?
There’s only one answer. Show us how your NetZero policy and technology machinations are going to be worth the cost.
It’s a tall order. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen claimed that the global transition to a low-carbon economy will require $3 trillion in new capital every year through 2050. So the question is, how much will that $75 trillion dollar “investment” lower the planet’s temperature, and what tangible benefits will result?
The debate kicks off this Thursday night, November 14th at 7pm ET, in MIT’s Wong Auditorium. There MIT’s leading climate scientist and leading climate economist will square off against former Caltech physics professor, Obama’s undersecretary for science, and Texas Public Policy Foundation’s leading energy analyst. The Oxford Union style tag-team smackdown will be moderated by Father Heterodoxy himself.
