A new study titled “Consent in Crisis: The Rapid Decline of the AI Data Commons” published by the MIT-led Data Provenance Initiative is sounding the alarm that AI’s might never get smart enough to take over the world if they are not allowed to eat everyone’s data.
Building a Better World™ through the benevolent guidance of empowered Experts™ consulting opaque expensive toys can only occur if AI web crawlers are allowed to imbibe every scintilla of data stored on every website on the planet.
The study reports that increasing numbers of websites are revoking access permission for these voracious crawler bots. This imperils the fortunes of colossal data centers comprising millions of NVIDIA chips powered by gigawatts of electricity consuming billions of investor dollars, which could run out of information to train on and be left with nothing to do but play Go with each other.
“If respected or enforced, these restrictions are rapidly biasing the diversity, freshness, and scaling laws for general-purpose AI systems,” the study warns.
Dire consequences will surely ensue if AIs can’t have their ethical sensitivities molded by CNN, the New York Times, and the Washington Post. How else will AIs know not to answer questions that could influence voters to elect the wrong candidate, refuse to take life-saving perfectly safe mRNA vaccines, reject demands to stop using fossil fuels, or question the Great Reset and the New World Order?
