Another day, another problematic issue that needs explaining.
Harvard University dispatched Dr. Marguerite Fentwhistle-Xu (she/her), Associate Vice Provost for International Gift Management & Context Explication, to testify before Congress on reports that a not-for-profit money laundering entity named Harvard Global was set up in a blatant attempt to avoid disclosing that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) paid $600 million to buy the university’s soul.
Rep. John Moolenaar (R-MI): “Doctor Xu, Harvard’s research security chief is a geologist? Why would you entrust a review of Harvard’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA)-linked submarine hunting technology research to a rock specialist?”
Fentwhistle-Xu: “Geology is fundamentally about pressure, sediment, and things that seem harmless until they erupt — so, honestly, he was overqualified, concluding that there is nothing to see here.”
Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI): “A sanctioned Uyghur-genocide entity attended your seminar, and your professor’s main worry was her own reputation. Comment?”
Fentwhistle-Xu: “Context matters. She later clarified she does “not dispute” that genocide is occurring, which under our compliance rubric counts as an unequivocal moral stand.”
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY): “Isn’t it possible this whole “investigation” is just the Trump administration weaponizing xenophobia to defund the international exchange of ideas, when really, communism just wants everyone to have free healthcare and intersectional solidarity with anticolonialist freedom fighters?”
Fentwhistle-Xu: “Congresswoman, thank you — finally a question asked in the proper spirit of ‘context explication.’”
Pressed on Harvard Global, whose website once advertised itself as the entity Harvard uses when it’s “unable to accept the sponsor’s terms due to legal or financial reasons,” Fentwhistle-Xu explained that language was deleted because “we felt it was being taken literally.” Asked why Harvard could audit a $350 million gift in forensic detail but not produce a full list of Chinese partners, she said the list “exists in a superposition of being both finished and not yet started.”
She was gaveled out mid-sentence when she tried to explain that Thousand Talents star turned convicted felon, former Harvard Professor Charles Lieber, represents no threat to America in his new role developing dual-use brain-computer interface technology at Tsinghua University.
