MIT staff social workers minister to intercultural engagement

MIT Intercultural Engagement Center

“Hello! My name is Kayleigh (she/her). I am one of the new Graduate Assistants in the MIT Office of Intercultural Engagement (i.e.)! I am currently pursuing my Master’s in Social Work at Boston College, after recently graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Sociology. My long-term goal is to become a clinical social worker and advocate for adolescent mental health, with a particular focus on creating accessible and culturally responsive care. I was drawn to i.e. because of its commitment to fostering belonging, dialogue, and equity on campus. Outside of academics and professional work, I enjoy watching shows and movies, painting, and cooking.”

I’m so glad that MIT can still afford to fund so many social programs as part of its sprawling Division of Student Life, especially with indirect overhead payments getting slashed. President Kornbluth has done a great job retitling and redeploying DEI staff that would otherwise attract negative attention.

The Intercultural Engagement center is a shining example of the sustainability of progressive indoctrination programs even in the face of reactionary headwinds. Our mission is to build community by providing a myriad of educational and social opportunities for students and over 70 cultural and identity-based student organizations. Can you believe that the world’s leading STEM university supports so many identity-based organizations!

What do we actually do? We advocate on students’ behalf. We engage students in culturally rich dialogues while supporting them through difficult conversations. We educate students about leadership, identity, and belonging. We are especially good at appreciating intersecting identities.
