MIT president freezes all DEI hiring, launches third-party review

MIT Office of the President

The Beaver had a dream …

Dear members of the MIT community, here on campus and around the world –

In order for MIT to remain the world’s premier STEM institute it is imperative that we apply objective, scientific scrutiny to our own policies. Unfolding events have proven that despite the noblest of intentions, MIT’s countless Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs as well as the new Strategic Action Plan for Belonging, Achievement, and Composition have failed to live up to their own stated objectives.

Rather than doubling down on this failure, in consultation with the Executive Committee of the MIT Corporation, we have asked our counsel at Goodwin Law to conduct a thorough fact-finding review and analysis of these programs. The goal is to understand why, despite our best efforts, they have not created a harmonious community. We especially need to investigate the connection between the divisive philosophies, policies, and administrative practices of our many DEI deans and officers and the resurgence of virulent antisemitism on campus.

During this investigation I have ordered a hiring freeze of all DEI related positions across each of our schools, departments, programs, and projects.

I ask for your patience and support as we work our way through these troubled times.

Sincerely,

Sally Kornbluth

And then the Beaver woke up to another day of the floundering mess at his alma mater.
